Wind-blown sand gradually formed the dunes, valleys and lakes that shape the landscape today. Since 1973, the area has been managed by **Natuurmonumenten**. Because of its exceptional natural value, Het Zwanenwater was awarded international **Wetland status** in 1988 as an important area for migratory birds.
