Het Zwanenwater in Callantsoog: Nature, Peace and Birdwatching

Het Zwanenwater in Callantsoog is a unique and protected nature reserve, hidden among the dunes of Noord-Holland. This special area is known for having some of the largest natural dune lakes in West-Europe and is an ideal destination for nature lovers, hikers and anyone looking for peace and relaxation.

During a walk through Het Zwanenwater, you will discover beautiful dune valleys filled with flowers and butterflies. In spring and summer, flowering plants transform the valleys into a colourful landscape.

Birdwatching at Eerste Water and Tweede Water

Het Zwanenwater is a paradise for birdwatchers. From several birdwatching hides, you have beautiful views over Eerste Water and Tweede Water. You can observe numerous bird species here, including cormorants, tufted ducks and greylag geese. During migration periods, you may even be lucky enough to spot some special species.

A popular walking trail runs along Eerste Water, where you will find a floating birdwatching hide. From here, you can not only observe birds but also check the water level. The trail continues to a second birdwatching hide overlooking Tweede Water – a perfect place to enjoy nature in peace and quiet.

Grazing Cattle and Special Plants

Cattle graze in the nature reserve and play an important role in landscape management. By grazing on grasses and young trees, they help create space for rare plants and flowers to grow. This makes Het Zwanenwater particularly valuable and contributes to preserving biodiversity.

The History of Het Zwanenwater

Het Zwanenwater has a long history dating back to 1596, following the construction of the Zijperzeedijk. Wind-blown sand gradually formed the dunes, valleys and lakes that shape the landscape today.

Since 1973, the area has been managed by Natuurmonumenten. Because of its exceptional natural value, Het Zwanenwater was awarded international Wetland status in 1988 as an important area for migratory birds. In 2008, it was also designated as a geological heritage site.
