The cheese market in Alkmaar dates back to 1365, when the city first had an official cheese weighing house. Since 1593, the traditional cheese carriers guild has played an important role, and they are still active today.
Alkmaar became known as the cheese capital of the Netherlands and remains the only place where this traditional way of trading cheese is still performed in such an authentic way.
At the Waagplein, you can watch how thousands of cheeses are traded using traditional methods. Cheese carriers dressed in white outfits with colored hats transport cheeses on wooden barrows, while traders negotiate using the famous “handjeklap”.
